Obesity stresses the spine by the additional weight it is forced to carry. Overweight individuals experience more muscle and ligament pains – this reduces overall mobility and contributes further to back problems.
Individuals with a substantial amount of fat around the stomach have tension pulling their pelvis’ forward (creating hyper-lordosis) putting the low back in a compromised and uncomfortable position.
Lack of physical activity, obesity and back pain seem to come together creating a viscous cycle. Without physical activity the body will atrophy and unused calories will contribute to greater fat deposits – without intervention a person can get to the point that activity is unbearable.
